36 Shepherd or Hired Hand

John 10:13

The shepherd flees from the danger rather than confronts it. The conclusion is that we, as humans, are God's treasure. His love. He feels for us, and misses us when we go astray.

The shepherd is the owner, he is invested into the productivity of his flock. He may have spent half his life building his herd and they might represent his income, livelihood, and inheritance. For his flock to be threatened, he himself is threatened. He cannot run, for if his flock is destroyed then he too is destroyed. His hired man is just that, a hired man. Paid to be somewhere at a certain time. He is not invested past his wage and this can be replaced.

To live as a Christian is to live with a shepherd. To live apart from God is to live under a hired hand.
