210 Lawless Idolatry

1 Peter 4:3

What could be considered Idolatry?

When I ask this question I must contrast it to adultery? What constitutes adultery in a marriage? Is it only the specific act with another, that is not your wife? If this is so then is everything else allowable? Should you kiss other women? Should you date other women? Hug? Lust after? Should you ignore conversation with your wife and instead seek out conversation with other ladies? What if you devoted much more time to thinking of ways to please other women than your wife? What if you spent more money buying gifts or providing for other women? What if when you were troubled you sought consolation from another man's wife? Again I ask what constitutes adultery? If our relationship with God is likened to a marriage relationship then idolatry might be like letting any of our relational needs be met by another? Idolatry might look like prioritizing our own ambition above God's will. Idolatry might mean spending more time talking about sports, hobbies, possessions, or entertainment than about the One you love. I suspect the things we value the most are the things we think about most. For our own sake, I hope the thing that Christians think about most, is God.
