196 Christian Funeral

What is the consolation at the funeral of a Christian?  So often I hear the spoken comfort being that we will see them again in heaven.  The grief, loss, and pain of death is very real, but the risk of separation from God is worse, so I will continue.

Should seeing our loved ones again be the focus and comfort?  Biblically, it does not seem so.  Our highest goal and hope should be union with our Savior and not union with people we had relationships with on earth.  Does it not prove that our hearts love the wrong thing when our comfort is found in seeing loved ones again instead of seeing Jesus face to face?  "If anyone loves his father, mother, son or daughter  more than me, he is not worthy of me."  Yes, it is difficult to understand how to love God even more than the good gift of family, but is it worth risking eternal separation to not ask the question?  How should a Christian funeral look?  What should be our focus?  What should be our hearts highest hope?  We will not marry or be given in marriage in heaven.  We will be peers in the presence of the Creator who holds our whole heart.
