Mark 7:6-9

And he said to them, “Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written, “‘This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me; in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’ You leave the commandment of God and hold to the tradition of men.” And he said to them, “You have a fine way of rejecting the commandment of God in order to establish your tradition!

Are our hearts truly near to God? Do we honor Him with our lips, but secretly love the world more? What evidence is there of our true hearts desire? We schedule spiritual activities around our worldly ones. We struggle to tithe. We worry, even though Jesus said there was no need. If the heart speaks out of the mouth then what is it we devote most of our conversation to? Is it our jobs, our vacation destinations, is it our activities or kids activities, is it our business? Do we have a hard time mustering up conversation about any of these things or is it difficult to talk about building God's kingdom. I suspect if we longed to produce fruit in keeping with repentance then we would be fairly obsessed with God centered speech. I suspect we are not, so we do not.
