Luke 12:50
I have a baptism to endure.
I wonder, at times if we have a perception of baptism that is a bit off. I have a baptism to endure, Jesus said, and later talks about a baptism of fire too. In teaching a group of kids about baptism, the way I illustrated it in my own mind was like a jersey. We can join a team, but if we fail to put on a jersey then our teammates won't know we belong, and we won't be very effective to the team. On the flip side though, putting on a jersey marks us for the enemy, which is what I think about when I think about Jesus' words.
What if we looked at our baptism more like an initiation into the spiritual battle? What if we knew that when we joined the fight we would be attacked? What if we expected it? What if we fully understood that we, for the rest of our earthly lives, simply had a baptism to endure, like Jesus.
