190 Military Exercise

Consider the new military recruit.  Perhaps a young man fresh out of high school.  A young man like this might or might not have his head screwed on right, but barring this variable he knows nothing about fighting in war.  How effective would this young man be if we stuck him in a classroom, told him everything he needed to know, and then sent him directly to the front line to fight.  He likely would die, and if this was how we trained everyone, then the war would almost certainly be lost.  Training does consist of some head knowledge yes, but a majority of military training is active practice.  First as a team in the safety of home base, but then with live weapons and steadily more risk.  Before long he is sent out on missions to match his growth and shortly after that he might be considered expert.

How are we training ourselves to fight principalities and evil?  Christians who have believed for 30, 40, and 50 years still sit in the pews, humming along with the songs and smiling at the teaching that they have been taught so many times.  What is the cost to the war when we think spiritual growth only happens through listening to a sermon. Is the spiritual war being lost in this country because God's soldiers never find their way out of the classroom?
