What is prayer? Is it saying words with your eyes closed and hands clasped? Paul says to pray at all times and in all circumstances. Does this mean we ought to join a monestary and spend every moment on our knees? When I think about prayer it goes hand in hand with what we say we have with the Living God. What we have is relationship. In this, I think about my relationship with my wife. Is every moment with her spent in constant word speech? No it is not, but as we grow together we often do things together. We also often communicate without having to say anything. I notice when my wife does something for me and vice versa. In fact, as I look at people who have been married for a long time I see less and less need to speak and more automatic communication grounded in the awareness of each other. It seems like this is the goal we should have in our relationship with God. In everything we do, we have our relational God in mind. Everything we see, we look for evidence of His character and intent. In everything we do, we seek His guidance and will. Our joy is shared. Our sorrow is shared. Our ambition is shared. Prayer seems to be an inescapable foundation of relationship with God. It is regretful that we often don't value it or invest in it like we should.
