11 Badly Mistaken

Mark 12:27 How often do we find consolation in death thinking that we will see our loved ones again in heaven. As I sit back and think about this I begin to see why this is such a bad mistake. Jesus seriously corrected the questioners in this regard. When we look at what is important in life whether in Christian circles or pagan ones, family is core of what gives our lives meaning and value. The Sadducees questioning Jesus that day asked about a group of brothers who had all in turn married the same woman as the Jewish law had required. Who's wife would she be in heaven? The question was a human one, one not unlike finding consolation in seeing a loved one again in heaven. Both scenarios assume the same thing. That relationship between humans will matter the same way it does here on earth. It will not. As I have thought about human relationship, the conclusion I have come to is that it is a thing like many other created things. It is meant to be enjoyed, but it can be abused. It takes work, but when it is carried out in the way God intended, it is meant to reflect the creator. Human relationship is a gift, not to take the place of God, but instead to point us to Him. If we find ourselves in heaven one day I am sure of this, who our mother is will not matter. Our long lost spouse will be more like a brother to us than husband. It is a warning to not to look forward to heaven to see again who has gone before us. Relationship with God himself is what will matter the most and if it is not our highest hope and desire then let us ensure nothing has taken His place in our hearts.
