How effective is a lineman that doesn't know the playbook? The quarterback could take the time in the huddle to explain each play just before it is executed, but how effective would it be? His ineffectiveness might let the opposing team through or even mean injury to unprotected teammates. Each team member has a different role that they must know the playbook so that they will be an effective team. If a team takes the field without this knowledge and practice, what does it say about the coach? The coach might have tried hard, but the team was lazy. The team may have been eager and willing, but the coach lazy. We each have responsibility in God's kingdom. We might argue that we have God's word easily accessible on or phones or on the book on our shelf, but when the massive brutes that the enemy sends show up, grabbing the playbook off the shelf will not be good enough. We will be rolled over and destroyed the same way the seed scattered in the rocky soil was. Depending on the role God intends for your life, there is a good chance you won't be the only one injured by your lack of preparation. Baring all injury, what hope do we have of beating God's enemy if we don't even know what God is telling us to do and say. We learn this through hard practice. Practice that risks our vulnerability. Practice that risks our dignity and pride. Practice that requires stillness and humility before the God of the universe, who happens to be on our team.
